The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is a national organization dedicated to providing quality engineers and technical talent to the workforce. We are brought together by heritage, social responsibility, and the desire to improve equality of all people through the use of science and technology. We value excellence in education, professionalism, and leadership, and aim promote our values among our members and community.

Today, SHPE has grown to include more than 60 professional chapters and 230 student chapters throughout the United States and Puerto Rico and those numbers continue to increase. Throughout my five years at Florida State University, I was able to witness the evolution of the FSU SHPE chapter.

From transitioning executive boards, changing chapter structures, and amended bylaws, the chapter has grown to include over 140 members and become the most prominent student organization of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. I was lucky enough to contribute to this evolution with my involvement in the chapter leadership as Treasurer, Public Relations Officer, and President.

I'm good with people...

Upon completing my sophomore year as the treasurer of the chapter I decided to maintain my involvement in the club leadership by running for Relationship Management Officer. “Forget the spreadsheets and balance sheets, I want to deal with people!” I told myself as my year being finance guy of the club drew to a close.

Who let the new guy handle the money?

Who thought that letting the new guy handle the chapter finances was a good idea!? This is what I thought to myself when I was announced the new chapter treasurer for the 2011-2012 executive board. This was the beginning of a long and fruitful career within the SHPE organization.

I've done more than just leadership roles...

I was heavily involved in SHPE for the better part of my time in school where I held several leadership roles. Besides just the shear management roles, I was also involved in the organization in many other ways. I was invited to attend the National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA), which an exclusive conference for distinguished SHPE leaders. I attended the SHPE National Conference every year I was in school.  I also participated in several regional retreats, conferences, and events. Here is some of the anecdotes I have from my many years as part of the SHPE Familia.

As you can see, SHPE took a big part of my life while I was in school. They've continued to grow and evolve as a chapter to reach new heights. If you'd like to see more of FSU SHPE, donate to the chapter, or see about past and upcoming events go check our our pages through the links below.
