Yeah, I bank bro
As a mechanical engineer with a passion for the sciences, I sometimes asked myself how I ended up in banking. Then I'd look at the building I was sitting in, I’d listen to the traders yelling in the background and see the bankers running their models. Then I’d remember why I was there. It’s an unparalleled environment with an energy like no other. It’s Wall Street.
Here are the stories of how I went from engineering to banking, and what I did during my time at Barclays.
No, I did not have to go fetch coffee
I wasn't sure what I was getting into, but man did it turn out to be an incredible experience. I interned in Barclays during the Summer of 2014 on the U.S. Rates Desk middle office team. Being an engineering student, this role was challenging and posed a steep learning curve. Business Management, whats that?
I came back to Barclays in the Summer of 2015 as a full time employee. After reviewing many available roles I decided to join the Operations Business Management team where we were tasked with overseeing budgets and managing business strategies for a division of the bank. This was it, I was officially an employed adult. Read more about my experience in my first adult full-time job and how it felt to officially move to the city through the link below!
We charge interest on lent money
At the end of my first yearly rotation of the Barclays Graduate Program, I decided to take on something different an challenge myself. I joined the Bank Debt Management (BDM) team in August of 2016. Here I learned about loan syndication, bank debt financial instruments, and how corporations around the globe use investment banks to finance their operations.
